Dedup appliance Kernel Panic when requesFLR on Lin
by rynardts 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hi,

I'm getting a kernel panic on my Dedup VM whenever I try and to a FLR on a backed up Linux VM. I've tried it with several Linux VMs and everytime I get a kernel panic. See the image:

Any help would be appreciated as I'm writing a blog post on the product. I'm using esXpress 3.6-7

Regards

Rynart,

We have not seen this issue before.

Can you open a ticket with our support group and also send us a phd-support file from your DeDup appliance.

Pete

Rynardt,

Thanks for opening a support ticket and sending us a phd-support file from the DeDup appliance. This issue has been raised to our engineering group. We will review the support file you sent and see if we can determine what is the cause.

We will follow up with any additional information.

What flavor of Linux is RSMYSQL01? I want to make sure in our testing to try to reproduce this, we are using a filesystem created with the exact same version of reiserfsprogs.

It's Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES10). Built from the same template. Do you thing it's something to do with my template?

FYI, I am experiencing the same issue with Novell SLES 10 and ReiserFS. Haven't yet tried EXT3 file system.

UPDATE:

Tried an EXT3 files system. Did not get kernal panic, but did see error message on bottom of status screen which said:

nal commit I/O error

The error shows up during file browsing, selection, and restoring. The error message disappears after the refresh cycle.

Files and folders are displayed; restores seem to work.

The commit i/o error on ext3 is working as designed. That is the ext3 filesystem trying to replay the journal and we are not allowing it as this would be modifying your backed up data. The issue with reiserfs appears to be the exact same thing, except that the kernel is crashing rather than handling the error gracefully like ext3 does. Technically, this is a bug in reiserfs. That said, we are working on a solution to resolve this issue.

Rynart,

I also emailed this to you. We have duplicated the issue in our labs and are now working on a correction. It looks like the issue is specific to SES10 VMs with ReiserFS.

When we have a further update we can let you know. Thanks again for helping us with testing of this issue.
